I'm gonna sell the one I have now (which is preserved in a HARD case) and get one of these.

People are saying that the video will be skippy like cell phone streams, but they forget that each cell tower only get about a meg per sec to feed to all cell phones (i like how verizon brags about their "400kbps" CDMA.. which is horse shit. speed tests only give it 80kb on a good day )

Anyway, the video feeds right off the hard disk, so it can't possibly be that bad. It might be too wide though.. i don't know if i want an iObese.

Anyone else gettin this piece?

Are you talking about 1xEV-DO? Max theoretical is 2.4Mb/s, but it's still a relatively new technology. It's certainly faster than EDGE though, in both theoretical and real world speeds.

I really want an iPod video. I knew it was possible! I had been speculating about this since the first iPod was made known to me.

Apple's new thing? Video iPod. But more crap-o copy-blocking.

As everyone including your mom guessed, the big announcement from Apple today involved a video iPod. The 2.5", 320 x 240 screen looks super-sweet, it comes with a video-out jack for playback on your TV, and episodes of Desperate Housewives cost $1.99 (they should really be paying us to watch 'em, but that's another post).
Drool-worthy, no doubt. But if you believe that hardware manufacturers shouldn't restrict your ability to enjoy video files you've purchased and have the legal right to play, you'll be disappointed. Snip from Wired News story:
The video iPod will play music videos, video podcasts and movie trailers downloaded form the updated iTunes Music Store, but will not play movies ripped from DVD, which are typically copy-protected. However, it will play unprotected movies converted to Apple's QuickTime format, even if the movies are downloaded illegally from file-sharing services, said an Apple representative after Jobs' presentation. It will also display home movies, which can be exported to the iPod via a new function in Apple's iMovie software.
And here's an excerpt from Playlistmag's report:
Jobs explained to attendees of the media event that videos purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Music Store employ Apple's FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme, so they can be downloaded and played on multiple computers authorized to listen to and watch protected iTunes content, or transferred to video-capable iPods. There's one caveat, however -- videos you purchase from iTunes can't be burned to other media such as CD-R or DVD-R discs.
Mark Pilgrim says:
Here's a simple, step-by-step guide to using Handbrake for Mac OS X to rip your legally acquired DVDs into the right format to play them in iTunes 6 and the new video iPod -- Link. See also: HOWTO Put Porn On Your iPod. Link. A step-by-step guide for using ffmpegX to convert porn (or pretty much any other movie file you have lying around) to the iTunes/iPod format. Glenn Fleishman says,
I have been musing on who the hell needs a video iPod all day in the form and design Apple chose.
* Can't transfer TV programs, although if you have an eyeTV (which can't tune digital cable or satellite) you might be able to port the output through a converter.
* Not much content yet designed to play on it.
* Battery life while watching video is rated at 2 to 3 hours, thus not long enough for even a half-country-hopping flight.
* Can't burn the content you buy for it, so you suddenly have a storage and management problem.
* Only by violating the (anti-constitutional) DMCA in some cases can you begin to approximate how this device could be used as a fair use (not FairPlay) extension of one's free TV, pay cable, and owned (not 0wnz3d) DVDs.
So this is for Greenwich-to-Manhattan commuters with disposable cash who don't watch Lost or Desperate Housewives the night before because they're too busy playing squash. They can watch DH on the way into work and Lost on the way back without running out of battery life...just barely. Now, I'll go all Long Tail on this and say that when the backlist of television is suddenly available in some reasonable form (yes, it will all be frickin' DRM'd to death) then there's an enormous amount of content people will pick and choose certanly at less than $1.99 per episode. I also read in one source that Apple is negotiating with the BBC for access to their massive library.

advertising targets what will make the service look good.

CDMA is definately capable of pushing 400kbps (maybe even 1mbps), but the problem they face is with the numbers of towers. There are too many towers to place 400kbps for each individual line to be able to access. So, rather than giving every tower the same speed, they only give metro cities high speeds (250-300 kbps), and advertise it as if the whole US can get it.

gsm is extremely slow. it sucks nut granted. the only 2 advantages GSM takes over cdma is that it isn't even fully developed in the US yet. 3g hasn't got to the US for one. and GSM phones use SIM cards, therefore giving a back-up option to save phone numbers on, an option CDMA does not offer.

I'm not talking about advertisements, I'm talking about white papers on the actual technology. EV-DO is still faster than EDGE, both in real world speeds and max theoretical speeds. Any limitation on it right now is due to network grown, nothign more. I've tested this many times with my friends phone; he has EV-DO with Verizon and I have EDGE from Cingular. His phone consistently tests out at a much higher speed than mine. EDGE was a pretty shitty 2.5G technology...

I don't know why you felt the need to explain GSM to me though, since I'm only talking about data protocols. But GSM also has better security and the freedom from Qualcomm licensing fees that CDMA carriers incur, and pass on to their customers.

Yes, CDMA definately provides better data access than GSM. On average, I see regular CDMA cells get around 80-100 kbps, while GSM lags behind at 50-60 (normally 120 in metro areas). I have seen smartphones like Treos and i730's get 750k-1mbps. My treo only gets around 100kbps in New Iberia, and 150-200kbps in New Orleans. big difference.

Security: As far as data, both networks are relatively secure. For voice, however, the GSM encryption is easily discovered because only one frequency is used at a time, allowing someone to more easily monitor a conversation. CDMA uses a widespread signal, so multiple signals change from multiple towers (x) # of times every second, making it extremely difficult (if not almost impossible) to pick up the waves.

Hacking CDMA is like being blind, trying to find someone's voice you know in a crowd of people.

What makes you say GSM is more secure than CDMA?

Have folks never heard of Archos. They have had something similar around for years. I had and Archos A320 for a while (had to sell it because I needed some money) but it was great. Over 20 hours of video footage and you can record straight from the Tv as well as download stuff on to it. It even has a remote control so you cand just plug it in to your tv and sit back on the sofa and watch videos from it.

The only reason people are paying attention to the iPod is because it is from Apple. And people talk about Microsoft taking over the world.

A coworker has an Archos. It's way too bulky in comparison to an iPod.

a 2.5in screen for video?...that will be used lots. 2.5in is good for a menu but not to try and follow a movie. get real.

i like apple, but they are just trying to see how fast they can turnover these sheep that will jump for the newest shiny toy. as long as people jump, they will continue.

the archos av700 has a 7in screen but is about $800. at 7in, they are actually thinking about real use.

What the fuck? A new model every two weeks now?

And no trade in program?

This is a dumb-ass idea.
