Why is it that if I tune to a classic rock station.. they don't censor lyrics...I thought about it today after I heard the Dire Straits song "Money for nothing"... the song includes the following lyrics:

See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire

now I really don't care that it plays and isn't censored... I just wonder... well I know this wouldn't fly on a Rap/R&B station... say... if .. Eminem sang it...
do you think this is because only old people listen to classic rock stations.. and they are more 'mature'.... ?

It probably wouldn't fly with Eminem listeners and such because they are young kids (stupid parents let them listen to that...). There's one rock radio station where I live that doesn't censor at all - and typically the people who listen to it are around my age (18+) to like 30-35 years old. Only the pop (which has turned into R&B/Rap) stations play eminem and crap like that. My guess is as good as yours. It's probably the age and maturity level of the listeners.

It is strange that they don't censor the radio. It's easier to access than the TV (with "bad language" and the like). Hmm...

I think its due to the fact, that rap and hiphop are directing it towards a certian being. Like for example, if eminem were to sign "elton john your a fag" Everyone would get upset about that, but if a classic rock station plays a song that sings "look at that rock star, hes a fag." That doesn't really talk about anyone in particular.
Who knows, its just my own stance on this.

country singers can say whatever they want too...
However, country singers, in general, keep it clean with regards to the words they use. I have NEVER heard a country song that had the words "fuck", "shit," "cock", etc in it.

As for censorship on the radio, from what I've heard, it's a station by station thing. One of the local rock radio stations doesn't really censor at all, while the other cuts out everything from "chrome 45" to "death" to "suicide", as well as all the "conventional" bad words.

From what planet are you?

I remember the nice song...

Were you born an asshole...
Quite a laugh.

What I don't understand is that in America, the home of the free..
Music seems to be censored, according to what I read here.
In Europe there is no censorship.
Nobody gives a damn about it anyway.
Only nazi and hate music is prosecuted.

Censorship is why I don't listen to the radio.

However, most bands I listen to don't even need censoring of any kind. They just scream. Someone could have the word fuck in their song and it would come out as "FAAARRRGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!"

None of the Cleveland stations I listened to ever edited RATM tracks, I always wondered how they got away with that.

This is true, and quite Ironic.

Eric Clapton - "Cocaine" plays loud and clear, yet Buck Cherry uses the word Cocaine in their music, and it gets censored. Not that I like Buck Cherry, I think they suck, but what's good for the goose is good for the one hit wonders.

The other thing I wonder about is the practice to play music backwards to find dark messages..
Complete and utter nonsense if you ask me.

In the Netherlands though we also have sometimes a riot in music land ;)
One Dutch native stand up comedian even made a rap called "death threat".
It was very rough and cynical, but he got away with it.
No problem.
But muslims get problems nowadays, if they spread hate songs..

A muslim killed a Dutch filmmaker last week, who used the word "goatfuckers" often when he was talking about muslims.
Now everybody, especially the right wing is shouting that the freedom of speach is attacked by muslims.
Well, my view is, if you cant stand the heat, don't go sit near the fire.

The Dutch don't seem to understand, that it might be deadly to hurt another persons feelings in another culture.
Personally I would never call a person from the Mediterranean area a "son of a bitch".. They take such a remark serious over there :(

The Dutch don't care about that.
Yes! I really am a ranting son of a bitch! :D
And I am proud about it!

There is a reason for the FCC censorship. If you are in a public domain, like, a restaraunt, you probably dont want your kid hearing Eminem or Nothingface. I know I dont. Or, say if you buy your kid a radio, you dont want them listening to stations that promote violence and sex at a young age. It has its uses. That is why we have ratings on movies and television and music, to protect the innocent. If you dont like public radio censorsiip, get off your ass and buy a shortwave radio, you can pick shit up from europe.

Cencorship even ruins the reputation of many bands, let me take KoRn as an example:
The song Ya'll wanna single contains basicly nothing but screaming FUCK, but it can be a quite nice sound track if you listen it...now the cencoring idiots have made them sing a cencored version where they say "Ya'll wanna single say suck that"What the fuck? If that isn't bad enough, they actually sing "Suck that shit"...this is pure crap, they ruined a good(/acceptable) song...same with their Right Now song
The original song goes "Shut up, Shut up, Shup up I'll fuck you up"
Now the cencored version goes "Shut up, Shut up, Shup up I'll bust you up" ...wtf? Cencorship in general pisses me off (in another aspect of cencorship...god, the dickheads destroy so much good porn ;) )

Back when I used to like Papa Roach (a few years ago), I found that I could only enjoy them in CD form, not in radio. Why? Censorship. I would like to take this time to put the censored version of the chorus from "last resort" here.

__ my life into ___
This is my last ___
____, no ____
Don't give a ___ if I ____________

...I'm serious. They went THAT overboard with it. It was absolutely disgusting.
