So.. There has been alot of discussion concerning my homecountry, and I thought it wouldnt be a bad idea to wrap it all under one topic, as all the other topics have already turned to off topics, at least on some level...

So anything you want to know, want to say, think you know and.. well anything about Finland say it here. We´ll set you straight..
It´s also quite interesting to see what other countries think about us, stereotypes etc..

So go on, here you can shine with your wisdom, or replace the distorted facts.

So.. To break the ice a few facts.
*Finland has a population of ~5 200 000
*People having a qualification of upper secondary schools, vocational schools and colleges, polytechnics or universities. = 61,0 %
*Gained indepence December 6, 1917
*Civil war 1918
*Was ruled by Sweden 1150-1809
*Was ruled by Russia 1809-1917 (as the Russian grand Duchy of Finland)
*Women gained voting rights in 1906
*Women gained full equality in 1919 by the constitution
*Fought in WW2 against Russia in following wars:The winter war (1939-1940), the continuation war (-1944)(Finland being helped by german troops), and finally the Lapland war, where Finland fought Germany to leave Lapland, a northern part of Finland. This lead to the burning of Lapland by the Germans. (Finlands treaty with the soviet required Finns to remove germans from Finnish soil)

Dont be afraid, we wont bite (eventhough the Czech children were warned by their mothers in the 13th or so century that they shouldnt go out at night " as there would be the evil Finn. waiting to snatch little kids.." :) This was during the time when Sweden ruled much of the Europe, not least due to Finnish "hakkapeliitta´s" who were the Kings most trusted soldiers...)

Uhm, we went to high school together, remember? I also spent 362 days in the army, you had a theoretical 182 days more to educate yourself :)
Anyways, can't find any errors from those.

The Hakkapeliitta's are an interesting subject. Every single time the swedes got in trouble with other countries, mr. Stålhandske (Swedish for steel glove) and his Hakkapeliitta's were ordered to help out from Finland. And it always happened that Sweden eventually won those battles and the Finns came back home to do their farming and hunting, 'till the king needed help again.
It was propably some of that same fighting spirit that led the Finnish troops deep into Russian lands during the continuation war hundreds of years later. Russia had to bring extra troops from other battles to force us back.

yeah ths whole svedofinsk-era is interesting, hatut ja myssyt (eng. hats and caps, tranlated directly :) ) the vikings, wars in europe and every now and then against Russia.. But I assume that our foreign friends are not at all interested in these issues..

You may also prove me wrong.. I´d be happy to tell you more..

But it would be great if someone NOTFFINNISH would also write their beliefs, truths and questions.
Or at least say if you find this a boring subject and so on and so on...

Man, and I thought that the stupidity of americans was just a myth. Prove me wrong. Someone. Anyone.

And I´m not even askin´ why you have a half naked Alf in your computer, I mean, what anyone does on their spare time is their own personal business. I´m all fine with people who have weird sexual tendencies. In fact it´s great that you can come out to the open like that. It´s nothing to be ashamed for.

Now kids, here we seem to have a good example of an american. Notice how this specific american reacts to foreign people, it's so afraid of us it starts immediately shouting words like GAY. Now americans are quite dangerous, if one gets confused, which happens all the time, they can attac you without any reason at all. Unfortunately we don't have time to wait 'till this american calms down and starts making sense, so lets move to the next cage. Now kids, this one is called a chimpanzee...

think of this as your introduction to the american sense of humor....we have got to have the most scathing, abrasive, sense of humor in the world...we love to watch other people get mad about things that really dont mean anything (internet personalities' opinions on your country). And while we are her why dont we break down some american sterotypes as well....i'm sure i could search for it...but why? But wait....I see all the good things in finnish history, what about during WWII when there were finnish police/military exporting jews out of the country to the nazis? Even though I dont use Linux, I hear good things so, thanks for Linuus Torvalds. As for sterotypes....I'd have to say when i think if Fins i think of a wholesome family setting, with chubby girls in pig-tails serving lots of sausage and streussel. I'm sure there some german in there somewhere but I cant forget the clogs and windmills. Send some of those fat chicks my way Retart...i'll take care of them for ya :thumbsup:

That's not true. None of the jews in Finland were evicted, those 260 men of them who were liable to military service served in the army as any other Finnish men. Many jewish refugees tried to enter though. Finland let 500 of them stay, 350 of which had moved on to other countries by 1941. It has been said that Hitler ordered Finland to hand over those jews, but proof of that doesn't exist. Same sources say that the prime minister of Finland would have said to Himmler that we don't have an issue with the jewish people. They quess that was enough for Germany and these exports were never requested again.

Im sorry to inform you but finnish girls are mostly more like the swedish girl prototype.. Of course we have the fat ones too, if that´s your cup of tea. I´m not pimpin em to you, though.. Its just that chubby girls and sausage stereotypes for a hungarian shotputter for me.

And for the jew-matter... Almost every country denied to take in jews as refugees (US did this too) but it´s not like the holocaust was common knowledge, I believe that jews wouldn´t have been exported to the nazis had they (exportive nations) known the truth... And as my fellow finn said, Finland did not export the jews...

and by the way, for those of you who think polar bears roam the streets here. No. They do not. Or we do not have igloos either.

The situation of foreign nationals - particularly the Jewish refugees, who sought asylum in Finland, was more vulnerable. Finland was a co-belligerent State with Nazi Germany. Even if no formal demand from the German side is known, this co-operation prompted the Finnish State Police to hand over refugees originating from Germany or from countries under German occupation. Early on the 6th of November 1942, security service officials acting covertly under orders from the Minister of Interior Affairs, rounded up 28 foreign refugees, eight of them Jewish, and delivered them to the Gestapo in German-occupied Tallinn.

Yeah, refugees were turned back from the borders as I mentioned. I see it this way: Thousands of refugees trying to enter Finland, 28 were turned back to Tallinn, Estonia. 8 of them jewish. An unfortunate incident, most of illegal refugees are commonly returned to where they come from. Do these 8 illegal refugees make Finland an anti-jew country?
