Looks like the USA will blow through 4 million cases tomorrow. For contrast, Canada had 535 cases nationwide yesterday and under 120k total so far.

Now those numbers are still bad and our response fucking sucked in nursing homes, where a badly privatized system of care led to catastrophic death rates on the order of 1/3 residents in some homes. We have almost 9k total dead here, which is almost twice what Florida is reporting with 3x+ the case count.

What really spooks me is that the drumbeat for reopening, indoor dining, and eventually bringing schools back in the fall looks pretty unstoppable at least here in Ontario. Our traditional sense of Canadian exceptionalism (which always boils down to "well at least we're better than the States") seems to be blinding people to the lessons to be drawn from how this is going in other countries.

Californians think their state is perfect and that no other states would have problems if they were like California. Californians keep forgetting they have an extreme wealth gap between the rich and the poor, and now they have the highest amount of people with coronavirus.

I agree on the wealth inequality.

But as for the Coronavirus, that would be Florida is the highest number of ACTIVE cases, assuming they properly track active and recovered cases. The total cases is a fairly good stat to look at for spread of the disease. With that said, neither Florida nor California is good from an overall perspective.

Now some may say you have to break that down further by cases per capita, but I prefer rate of growth and spread.

Here's the top few states sorted by Active Cases.

Here's Ohio travel warning advisory highlighting those troubled states where the outbreak is spreading like crazy ...
DAMN, I wish I would have taken a pic of the email that was sent out by our company president about travel restrictions. On second thought, it's probably irrelevant and not something I'd want to post. LOL (our company president is one of the governor's biggest leg-humpers) It was a piece of paper handed to me at this morning's 'pulse' meeting. I didn't have time to look at it, let alone read it.

My state has similar travel recommendations. It was said at last week's Tuesday 'pulse' meeting that THEY could ask anyone scheduled for a vacation if they were travelling and where. And IF they decided to travel to one or more of the forbidden states, they would be required to miss work and quarantine themselves for 14 days upon returning. I don't think that one went over well.

* i have to attend the Tuesday 'pulse' meetings because that is my manager's day off and I'm running the show. they're a complete waste of time but sometimes you gather some tidbits.

The only East Coast knowledge I have, I got from Seinfeld.
It seems like FLA is the vacation, and retirement, get-a-way for anyone in NY.
Did every out of work NY'er just decide to escape the scaryness that was NY 3-4 months ago,
and high tail it to FLA for Palm Trees and drinks with little colorful umbrellas in them?

That spike is dramatically similar to what we saw in NY a few months ago.

We're starting to see small local resurgences due to idiots going out to pubs and ignoring distancing protocols. One pub was overwhelmed with pub goers and it resulted in 10 cases being traced back to that pub.

Expect to see +200K new cases of COVID-19 tied to this Annual Sturgis rally, all because of greedy businesses -- https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/a...ting-250k-stirring-virus-concerns/ar-BB17tDiT

Annual Sturgis rally expecting 250K, stirring virus concerns
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Sturgis is on. The message has been broadcast across social media as South Dakota, which has seen an uptick in coronavirus infections in recent weeks, braces to host hundreds of thousands of bikers for the 80th edition of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

More than 250,000 people are expected to rumble through western South Dakota, seeking the freedom of cruising the boundless landscapes in a state that has skipped lockdowns. The Aug. 7 to 16 event, which could be the biggest anywhere so far during the pandemic, will offer businesses that depend on the rally a chance to make up for losses caused by the coronavirus. But for many in Sturgis, a city of about 7,000, the brimming bars and bacchanalia will not be welcome during a pandemic.

Though only about half the usual number of people are expected at this year's event, residents were split as the city weighed its options. Many worried that the rally would cause an unmanageable outbreak of COVID-19.

This is a huge, foolish mistake to make to host the rally this year," Sturgis resident Lynelle Chapman told city counselors at a June meeting. “The government of Sturgis needs to care most for its citizens.

In a survey of residents conducted by the city, more than 60% said the rally should be postponed. But businesses pressured the City Council to proceed.

Nearly 100,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus in the last two weeks of July, a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics finds. Just over 97,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus from July 16 to July 30, according to the association.

Out of almost 5 million reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S., CBS News' Michael George reports that the group found that more than 338,000 were children.

This isn't from the same Georgia highschool brought to light earlier for the jam-packed hallways but it shows just how bad the in-person school situation will turn when you lack leadership in the higher offices.

It's sad that they talk up the step of "updating weekly current case totals". It's already too late by that time.

260 students and 8 teachers quarantined in Georgia school district after first week of school

At least 260 students and eight teachers from a suburban school district in Atlanta, Georgia, were quarantined after multiple students and teachers tested positive for Covid-19 during the first week of school.

In statements posted on its website, the Cherokee County School District reported positive cases in at least 11 students and two staff members. Students and staff who had possible exposure with a positive case have been told to quarantine for two weeks. The students were from the county's elementary, middle and high schools.

...

He added that school officials are taking extra steps for transparency, including not only updating weekly current case totals, but also posting school notification letters and details about each case.

...

Meanwhile, a Cherokee County second grader was possibly the first child to report being tested positive for Covid-19 after attending the first day of school, according to the district.

A student of Sixes Elementary , he began in-person classes on Monday. But by Tuesday, a classroom was temporarily closed for deep cleaning and the teacher and 20 other students had been asked to quarantine for two weeks after the second grader tested positive.

Here was the Georgia HighSchool pics from early last week. Fortunately all the news outlets picked up the story. Let's hope lessons are learned from this total fuckup in Georgia so it's not repeated elsewhere.
Nobody will learn. Schools aren't closing again, and the person who took this picture got suspended. Fuck the school system.
