I just heard that Congress has been presented with a bill to pass a law making it ILLEGAL for anyone to fast-forward through the ads at the beginning of either rental or personally owned DVD's and VHS tapes. What, are we going to have to go to jail or pay a fine just because we don't want to see commercials? BULLSHIT! Any thoughts from the peanut gallery???

It's pretty much the same thing as copying cds or dvds; sure it's illegal, but how are they going to catch you? I agree that it's a pointless bill, but will it really effect you? Probably not.

Yes, it would effect me. It is a matter of principle. Who has the right to tell me whether or not I have to sit and watch ads/commercials? I know there would probably be no way to enforce the law (if it's passed), other than maybe deleting the FFWD option on DVD/VHS. But regardless, if I don't want to watch ads then that's my right, and yours too. I will skip them anyway, law be damned. But like I said, it's principle.

BTW...think of all of the new ads that will pop up if this law passes. It won't just be movie ads anymore, I guarantee that.

SO, it wouldn't actually effect you, right? This bill is to keep the media giants happy, nothing more. Like I said; copying cds and dvds is illegal, but how many people do you know that do it? Compare that to the amount of people you know that've gotten into legal trouble because of it. This bill won't actually effect anyone, it's just an "on paper" type thing. It's retarded that they can even think about passing such a bill, but it's hardly anything to cry over. I also have my doubts as to whether this bill will actually get passed. If it does, it'll just be another useless bill that doesn't really effect anyone.

I haven't heard anythign about "new" ads yet and I've been following this bill for a while. That's not to say it won't happen, I just doubt it will. I seriously doubt they'll disable or "delete" the fast forward function though. There is sort of related story though, I posted it on another board last night.

This will directly effect me though, as I use Tivo. :(

Wow...that has got to be the biggest piece of bullshit I have ever read. This would have to be one of the dumbest bills in US history. And that is saying alot. Not allowing us to fast forward through the ads would be like not letting people flip channels when a commercial comes on. How the hell would they enforce it anyway? There is no way they could without serious violations of privacy rights. Which of course our government wouldn't do(sarcasm). Who the hell thought up this law anyway? Why on earth do they think it would actually pass? I am constantly astounded by the idiocy of the US Government. :mfinger:

This goes to show you how our politicians waste their time in useless bills, instead of focusing in what is real important.

If that's true then nobody will ever watch another porn flick on DVD again.
Everyone will pop their cork watching the ads before the movie even starts.

The fact of the matter is what is keeping you from taking a shitty Vhs player recoreding something and skipping. nothing. Tivo is meant to record stuff without the ads. plus its a fat chance congress will pass it.

I remember going to see movies, and every now and then they would have so many previews that I forgot what we were actually going to watch. Anyone else have that happen to them?
