Speaking to all woman. Awhile ago a girl I played an online fantasy game, EverQuest, with was found miles from her home raped and beaten with in an inch of her own life. A terrible thing for anyone to have to face and for those who are around her. While this was reported to us by her roomate on the forum, Question like how could this happen to such a good person surfaced to the top. Why did she go outside alone at night being a woman? Is there anything we can do?

It left me to wonder the one question no one openly spoke; Why does it take something like this to happen for woman to realize there is a lot they can do to protect themselves? It is every woman responsibility to know how to protect herself. After all no one cares for you as much as yourself. This is a wake up call to all. To those people who say this can not happen to me. This won’t happen to me… Stop living in a bubble of denial. It can happen at any given time. It can happen right now as I type this someone can break into your house and very easily rape and kill you. Sounds crazy? Maybe you should turn on your news, read a book or just open your eyes.

I am not telling you to spend the rest of your life in fear. Fear is a funny word to use when talking on subjects such as this. I like to use the words being alert and prepared. I don’t think of myself as being fearful. I am confident that I can take care of myself. I do not have words for woman who refuse to have some means to protect themselves. All woman should know the basic to;

Using a knife correctly as a weapon,
loading, aiming, firing a gun correctly.
fighting and defending themselves against an attacker.
identifying warning signs and escaping bad situations.
drawing as much attention to themselves when escaping an attacker.
Remembering details about the attacker.

You may be thinking, this is great but I have common sense so I am safe. Common sense only goes so far and even if you do everything correctly, there is always that slight chance. That one misguided step that can lead you down a path where you are face to face with an attacker. Will common sense stop you from freezing in the face of danger? If you find yourself being able to get a your hands on a gun, will common sense show you how to switch the safety back, aim and fire it? Common sense works great if you are able to stay calm and have knowledge that further back it up. However, common sense is only a minimum protection to avoiding a situation and is no protection at all once you are in that situation.

Get your hands on a self defense book and enroll yourself in a class. There is reason one should take a self defense class. First of all nothing is better then one on one training. Second of all practice make perfect. You do not find and break the limits of your body if you do not apply them to someone fighting back every bit as hard as you are. Self Defense book are great for shaping one’s mind. Classes are great for further developing those techniques and allowing you to correctly use them in the physical world.

Please do not believe if you are being attacked that going along and doing as the attacker ask will keep you safe and fighting back will only make it worse. This is an old, outdated and silly thing for ANYONE to BELIEVE. By all means fight and fight like hell. Remember rapist and kidnappers get the same punishment as a murder. A dead victim does not talk as well as a live one.

There is no such thing as a fair fight. You either fight to win or you fight to lose. You have every right to protect yourself and having the means to do it with does not make you a violent person. In fact it will help stops more violence from happening. If you are able to stop an attacker you have stopped that attacker from doing the same thing to another person. Ending a cycle of violence.

Make this years new years resolution one that will matter. Enroll yourself in a self defense class.

Good points kit, but as for the most basic self defense... all you womens wear them pointy little high-heeled shoes... a shot to the crotch with those babies and most men will start singing soprano. And I'm by no means saying that any man that accidentially frightens you deserves a wack in the ole trouser tackle, but as long as it ain't me, I'll laugh. :p So go out there, practice whacking men in the pills and see how easy it is!

Actually it something like this

How to block someone with a knife,
Link, http://www.safetyforwomen.com/mydefence.htm
(this is a little off)

When blocking the knife you want to turn to the side. NEVER leave your mid section open. PALM FLAT AND UPWARDS hit as hard as you can while in a swift motion bring your knee up into the stomace hard. Then step back. Like kicking a soccer ball straight to the groan.

Escape your situation as fast as you can. SCREAM, make as much noise as you can and draw as much attention to yourself as possible.

GET TO A PHONE AS quick as possible and call the cops

I completely agree. Rape and molestation, sexual harrassment, are horrible crimes. I have no pity for criminals such as that.

Proof?

I don't mean to rain on your parade, or disagree with you in anyway; I am giving my opinion. But don't give percentages without the necessary materials to back them up.

Some more info

Female victims of violence were more likely to be injured when attacked by someone they knew than female victims of violence who were attacked by strangers.

50% of all marriages experience one or more episodes of domestic violence.
In 20% of all marriages, this domestic violence is ongoing.
In the U.S., a woman is battered every 10 seconds.

(Lets paint a prettry picture come to six woman a minute,
come to 360 an hour 8640 a day.)

More than a third of the women treated for violent injuries in U.S. emergency rooms have been hurt by their husband or an intimate partner.

Male victims of violence are more likely to be injured by a stranger than by someone they know. Female victims of violence, in contrast, are much more likely to be injured by an intimate partner than by a stranger.
Each day in the United States, about four women are killed by an intimate male partner.

A woman is five times more likely to be assaulted in her own home than on the street.

FBI data indicate that 30% of female homicide victims are killed by their husbands or boyfriends. This translates into the death of four women per day at the hands of male partners.

In-depth research on all one-on-one murder and non-negligent manslaughter cases from 1980-84 found that more than one-half of female victims were killed by male partners. Sadly if you think cause thats an old report that the numbers are on the downside you are WRONG.

One of the most tragic outcomes of domestic violence is that well more than half of the young men between the ages of 11 and 22 who are in jail for homicide have killed their mother's batterer.

I once had a teacher who was almost raped. She ended up giving the guy a kick in the testicles, and he fell on the floor in extreme pain. She ran next door, called the cops, and it turns out it was a serial rapist.

She was in her brother's house, not even in her own. Freaky stuff.

This is all very good advice, and a very serious matter. But I can't resist.

For the record, I think the death penalty should also apply to sexual predators.

Sigh unforantly max people still believe that woman are helpless and no one should take a self-defense class and that it only works if you know you are goign to be attacked. As noted on the EQ board, I am at loss of words for the stupidity that an ex marine (or claimes to be an ex marine and one 17 year old boy has to say).

not to spoil the party, but women who carry weapons for self defense often end up being assaulted or killed with these weapons. personally, i'll stick to my pepper spray, thanks.

it sucks that it always falls to women to protect themselves... that we're doing little to stop date/acquaintance rape through educating MEN about it. now granted, this won't stop EVERY rape, but i really think we need to work on reshaping young men's attitudes. a woman NEVER owes sex to a man. NEVER.

There are programs that are in effect like that...

However it is up to everyone to protect themselves.
