I'm currently installing suse linux 10 to a 40gb remote hard drive.

At the moment its "Preparing your hard disk"

"Mounting /dev/sdc2 to /"

- the problem is, its taking a very long time. It's been going for about an hour, but went to 100% straight away.

Every now and then the HD activity LED comes on for a few seconds. Is it supposed to be doing that or is something wrong? I've never installed linux before.....

Sounds like it's formatting your drive, that would take a while on a 40GB drive depending on the filesystem you chose. Or maybe you didn't make a swap partition and it ran out of physical memory.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Suse and didn't really offer much information.
