Well Bill Gates:

Is awesome. He hooked us up with a fat, user-friendly, software package that any idiot like me can use.

I don't call routinely having gaping security holes being "user friendly." Furthermore, I definitely wouldn't award them that moniker when you take in the account of how long know security holes take to be patched, and the whole spy/adware epidemic.

I'm by no means an anti "misro$oft" zealot, but Windows does have it's share of bad points. I just find all the vague "OMG Microsoft suxorz" comments a bit silly, and cliche. If you're going to bash them, at least make a valid argument.

No, that's like saying the founder of Exxon popularized the automobile. It doesn't make any sense. Apple, and IBM paved the way, long before Windows was even thought of, much less a household name. Where do you think the terms "IBM PC" and "IBM compatible" came from? Definitely not Bill, nor Microsoft. What type of PCs do you think Windows ran on? Computers were already becoming popular when Windows 1.0 was released. Microsoft only piggybacked an existing market; They may have helped, but they're not THE reason.

But I digress, I'm not going to argue this topic with you.

mind you we might not have linux if there was nothing for linus to hate...

I see where you're coming from, but Mainframes != PCs. There were operating systems before UNIX though.

I believe Xerox was, if you count them, followed by the Macintosh.

before windows the average american did not know how to use a computer. That's how Bill gates is a reason why computers are so popular now.

Actually, Porn probably has a higher impact on popularizing computers. The second driving factor is games. Porn is one of the top drivers of all technological innovations -- color tvs, cable, vhs, dish, dvds, web sites, etc...

I remember having computers before Windows was popular; Commodore 64, an old Macintosh, and an IBM we ran DOS shells on - 14.4? Remember 9600?. [ I remember not even having a mouse until we got Windows 3.1. It was an old serial mouse. ] In fact, a lot of people used PCs before Windows was ever popularized, albeit nothing like the numbers today.
