Hello people. I am getting a summer job and plan to save up around 2500 dollars (canadian) which is about 1500 dollars american. I want to buy a notebook computer (laptop). I am willing to spend all the money I earn on the computer ($2500 cdn $1500 american). Could I please have some people who know lots about computers to recommend one for me. Ive looked at Toshiba, Dell, IBM, Compaq, Gateway, Sony, and many other brands. PLEASE HELP. (15' or 14.1' screen would be nice, 512 ram, centrino forsure)

Yah man, I was looking at a Toshiba around 2500, it had a DVD burner which is a must have. I just am going to use this one for school for 4 years than buy a pimped out one like the one you're describing. One thing is though, that I want 128mb videocard, most notebooks come with 64 mb. And most notebooks are 15.4' screens, thats too big for me, I want a 15" one. Thanks for your help man. Of the brands you mentioned I would only stay away from Gateway and compaq. Do yourself a solid. GET AN ONSITE SERVICE AGREEMENT. You won't be sorry. Dell offers a service plan that will cover it even if you damage it. You're taking it to school, and you're a pretty wild guy, so I can just see you having a party, and next day having to scrape hardened puke out from between the keys. Dell will cover that if you get the right service plan.

DVD is cool (invite the ladies to the dorm for porn night)
60 Gb HD should do it.
Get wireless. If not internal then get a card (a&g)
And please do yourself a favor. Don't go cheap on the case. I've seen too many people spend $$$ on a laptop and get a really cheap case w/ paper thin padding. Before you know it you'll have all kinds of problems caused by just normal transporting of the device.

if i were you, i'd shoot for portability more than ANYTHING else. i've had wood for those ultra-minute sony and sharp machines.
honestly, tiny, portable size is more important than a large screen. there's nothing like sitting in a denny's with a tiny little machine on the table and working on some stupid java program on your network...

Yah, portability is a main part of my choice. Sony and Sharp do not allow us to customize their products and are quite expensive for not less quality but less quantity hardware (you gotta spend 3.5k to get a dvd burner with sony). Dell is less portable forsure but allows customization. Im looking very closesly at Toshiba now. Dell second place. IBM thinkpads are a fucking rip off.morelos said:

Yah, I just preconfigured a dell inspiron, the total is about 2500 cdn, its key points are its dvd burner, 1 DIMM Ram card and its wireless capabilities. The hardrive could be more then 40 gb, and the 64 mb videocard could be more, but those are my only 2 worries, anyways, i'll post the specs:
