What the fuck is up with those plastic cases? When you buy something new and they are inside this thick plastic cover that is almost impossible to cut open. Some scissors don't cut through the plastic well and when they do you almost always get some sort of cut on your hands from the plastic edges! It's great when you have some anger build up that you must get rid of but for God's sake when I'm having a peaceful day, and I just come home from buying my new item that's covered in this thick plastic, it ruins the shit out of my day. Now I'm battling with scissors or a knife or some sort of sharp device that I must stab the fuck out of the new package with and get cut in the process. It's almost impossible to return the item if it's broken or not what I expected, because some places say the packaging must be in good order to return. Not that I do that often but it's something I keep in the back of my mind. :sword:

What's wrong with wrapping a thin film of a renold's wrap like stuff around a card board box? I mean if the only reason why it's wrapped like that is for beauty then make it one of those plastic cases that aren't superglued shut and has some sort of snap on it, then tape it closed. Bah! So it goes, the things I like the most I'll just have to struggle to open.... It must be some sort of conspiracy! Yeah that's it! LOL ;)

I dunno, maybe all of the plastic is there to protect the product from water or humity. Where I'm originally from (New Orleans) it is very practical. That place is below see level and surrounded by water, so the average relative humidity is like 500%.
But I agree it is pain in the ass ripping through it. I wish plastic was the only thing I had to struggle with to get into the things I love!

It's for protection purposes.

Here's a scenario:

a little kid is in a store with his mommy and his eyes fall upon some sort of treasure... the kind with small parts that can easily choke the kid... such as a kitchen knife. But, little does the kid know that it is surrounded by an impenetrable shroud of rock hard plastic... thus preventing him from swallowing the item.

imagine if it were wrapped in nothing but bubble wrap. not only will the kid choke on the bubble wrap, but he'll manage to get to the item, ingest it, and choke. the parent can sue the manufacturer for unsafe marketing.

the parent buys the item and goes home to try open it. however, that task proves impossible, because it is wrapped in the aformentioned impenetrable plastic shroud. by the time the package is finally opened, the parents hands are cut and bleeding, so she decides to sue the manufacturer for unsafe packaging.

or it could be so the item doesn't get damaged during shipping... or it could be to prevent theft. your choice.

I can totally relate. Two weekends ago I was heading to Orlando for a fun weekend. I bought a mini-dv for my digital video camera and it came on one of them stupid plastics boxes. On the way up, I wanted to record some interesting scenes. I asked my sister to open the box up, but she couldn't. I stopped and tried and couldn't either. We didn't have anything sharp enough to open the dammn thing. Finally, we asked someone for a pocket knife at the rest area and I was able to open the damm thing. I was so upset!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cut the top of that off, then yank it open with all my strength.

It's there to protect against theft, I believe.

That you are so wrong, I believe that Unforgiven is half right though. It is there to protect the little kiddies, but it is also there to prevent theft in the store. With the case on it, it is impossible for the criminals to walk out with it without the alarm going off from the little metal thing in it that sounds off when you pass that thing when you walk out the store. Kind of like Wal-Mart, that thing if the cashier does not slide the item through that metal thing that makes that prong noise, then that embarrassing voice alarm goes off by the door. So what I am trying to say, if we did not have those yes very annoying plastic covers over the expensive items, it would make it very easy for criminals to go in there and take it right out of the box and walk out the store with it, without getting caught. It is also to protect the kiddies, like Unforgiven said.

Maybe I'm wrong about the reason for the plastic. I don't do merchandising or packaging. But I know I am totally correct about the Cresent City's humidity!

I like to carefully cut around the object following the form of the contour. Then I fill it with plaster of Paris, and run around my neighborhood dressed like Indiana Jones, yelling, "I Eureka, I've discovered a Craftsman 5 pc. Wrench Set, Deep Offset Box End Fossil!!!".

But that's just how I do it. You all may have a different approach.

I'd agree with you except I have seen those plastic cases cut open with the item inside missing and evidently hidden behind a bunch of unopenned cases of the same item or tossed under other plastic cases. I'm not sure how people do it without being caught but apparently someone figured it out.

The plastic isn't for the kids, or theives, it's to stop stupid people from buying them, because if you're too stupid to open the case, then you don't deserve the item.

Hardware stores sell a large variety of these package-openeing devices, such as chainsaws.
