Cocaine-seeking rats a model for addiction studies

CBC News - Thu, 12 Aug 2005 18:27:27 EDT

IN WASHINGTON - Rats can show the key signs of addiction, confirming their value as an animal model for drug addiction studies.

Scientists have long known animals can prefer drugs but it wasn't clear whether they can actually become addicted like humans.

Now French and British researchers have shown that rats taking cocaine show similar signs of addiction to people who are hooked on the drug.

Researchers at the National Institute for Research and Health in France trained rats to poke their noses through holes in their cages to obtain cocaine.

Unlike most such studies that last up to a month, the French team allowed the rats to access cocaine for three months.

All the rats received cocaine. About 17 per cent were considered addicts, compared to 15 per cent of humans who regularly use cocaine, the researchers said.

As in humans, the addicted rats were about 90 per cent likely to resume cocaine use after going cold turkey for 30 days.

"Preliminary results show similar changes in brain activity between rats showing addiction-like behaviours and human addicts," the researchers wrote in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

In a second study appearing in the same issue, scientists at the University of Cambridge found addicted rats would overcome the memory of electric shocks to get a "hit."

Seeking drugs despite punishment is a sign of addiction in people.

Addiction specialists note there is a difference between casual drug use and physical changes to the brain and behaviour from addiction.

Researchers hope the new rat studies will offer a way to help them understand addiction and test anti-drug therapies.

Do you think it's ethical getting rats hooked on coke then zapping them every time they go for a line... damn. Poor rats... Ahhgg... HANG ON= FREE COKE :woot:/ AT COST OF A SHOCK... damn lucky rats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They should continue increasing the voltage to see if more pain will discourage cocaine use.

So you're holding in the most vile top secret info such as your toe fungus or scabs in unmentionable places? Blow a booger in your bosses salad and watched him eat it? Cut some nasty cheese in the middle of an interview? Share!
Where in any part of that does it say anything about eithics or news? The forums have a thing called descriptions, read them.

IllWillPress = Crappy animator, unfunny cartoons, sellout, out of plot, etc. etc.

I even got a Foamy fan to admit it at school, and he was wearing the T-Shirt that said "Someone should stab you in the eye with a really hard Fench fry."

I mean...It's the same shit every episode! I got bored of Pube Muppet because of that. Same jokes, different plot.
