Headlines Rice, Playing Down Rift, Urges EU to Get Tough on Iran

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program was "in our grasp" if Europe sent the same tough message as Washington, threatening U.N. sanctions.

She also appeared to accept that the European Union would lift its arms embargo on China despite U.S. misgivings, and hailed what she called NATO's new unity in working to help Iraq after three divisive years in transatlantic relations.

Her talks coincided with a visit to Europe by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who was expected to urge NATO defense ministers meeting in the French town of Nice to provide more military personnel and funds to train Iraqi security forces.

Underscoring the improved mood between the United States and Europe, Rice and top EU officials stressed their determination to cooperate on challenges such as supporting fledging peace efforts in the Middle East.

After talks with NATO foreign ministers, Rice played down divergence with the Europeans, which she had earlier underscored by saying Iran was not being given a clear enough message that it faced referral to the U.N. Security Council. "I believe that a diplomatic solution is in our grasp if we can have unity of purpose, unity of message with the Iranians, and if the Iranians understand that the international community is quite serious about it living up to its obligations," she told a news conference.

Is it possible that this Administration could be any more bent on World Domination?

A Rampant Vagitarian
