A man Said To The Universe

A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.

--Stephen Crane--

Aphrodites

Many colored throned immortal Aphrodita,
daughter of Zeus, wile-weaver, I beg you
with reproaches and harms do not beat down
O Lady, my soul

But come here, if ever at another time
My voice hearing, from afar
You gave ear, and your father's home leaving
----golden --- you came

yoking the chariot. And fair, swift
doves brought you over the black earth
dense wings whirring, from heaven down
through middle air.

Suddenly they arrived, and you, O Blessed One,
Smiling with your immortal countenance
Asked what hurt me, and for what
Now I cried out

And what do I want to happen most
In my crazy heart. "Whom then Persuasion
..............to bring to you, dearest? Who
Sappho hurts you?

And if she flees, soon will she follow,
And if she does not take gifts, she will give,
If she does not love, she will love
Despite herself"

Come to me now, the harsh worry
Let loose, what my heart wants to be
Done, do it!, and you yourself be
My battle-ally.

and my point has been made.

"One of the great Greek lyrists and few known female poets of the ancient world, Sappho was born some time between 630 and 612 BC. She was an aristocrat who married a prosperous merchant, and she had a daughter named Cleis. Her wealth afforded her with the opportunity to live her life as she chose, and she chose to spend it studying the arts on the isle of Lesbos."

She liked women. She wrote poetry. She helped create the lesbian culture that we see today.

It's in my heart, the pain that I feel,
to be just a dot on some cosmic wheel.
Wandering through the emptyness for millions of years,
and now getting a hormone boost by looking at the ass of Britney Spears.

Just kiddin'

Well... Of course!

The ancient Greeks knew all about women's lib.

Duh!

Unbelievable! Who the fuck gave you that idea?!

What you read are some eccentric poems of ladies of nobility.
Upper class tarts.

They do things to bide their time.
Write stupid poems, organize a party, and give their husband a blowjob after he comes back from some stupid war.

The same thing the upper class twit girls do nowadays. :D

Yeah, ok, and that has what to do with literature?

Can you write something that will be around 2000 years later?

Probably not.

Its about respect for dramatic literature and culture.

You are a dork.

And I am not upper class by anymeans, but I love literature.

To RED OCTOBER and his ENLIGHTENING COMMENTARY-However someone wants to interperet any reading is their perogative ...Maybe your right that the Greeks were not into "womens Lib' but we do know they were into man on man love a subject that Im sure YOU could enlighten us further on since you seem to have deciphered the rest of Greek literature for all of us "TARTS"......Oh yeah and dont be offended if I dont respond to anything that you post right away...Im busy giving my husband a blow job after tea and crumpets......

Thank you, I was trying to bring some class to the writing forum, it was getting weak. The greeks just liked to fuck, sacrifice, and make war. that pretty much sums up thier entire era. dont forget to use chapstick and brush you teeth.

Well, of course anyone can read whatever he or she likes.
I don't care, but don't put some 2000 AD idea in a poem of 1000 BC.
That's nonsense.
And don't start about how people think of literature 2000 years from now.
Most Dutch painters you love so much, died poor and forgotten.

She didn't create them. She wrote about them and studied them. She also helped with the name "lesbian" note that she was on the island of Lesbos.

Well this is funny :)

"Thank you, I was trying to bring some class to the writing forum, it was getting weak." -Dustinzgirl

That is rather insulting. You quote some old poem and that is not weak ? Try posting original stuff, then maybe you earn the right to say that. Don't go around insulting others 'not expecting to get it right back at you.

As for Red's rather rude way of saying things...he does make a point. Nowadays everybody and their cow try writing poems and novels. Just look at the bucketloads of crap that get's published every year, repetition was never that abbundant. Long long ago in a country far away...say ancient Greece, only rich people and scholars got to "publish" their work. As recent as the late 19th century only rich people got published. Upperclass poetry is abbundant wherever you look. Every Sir in England had a stab at writing and got away with it.

As for the lesbian bit, orgies and lesbianism were part of religious cults adopted by the greek. They did nothing more then steal it and call it their own, much like christianity steals it's hollidays, saints and customs from herretics, barbarians and pagans.

Please do not use this forum to flame eachother, and if you must, please don't curse, it's rather unbecoming.
