According to /. , a Microsoft insider has gone on record to talk about hardware requirements of Microsoft's newest OS, Vista.

Clicky for the article

Those of you know who don't want to read the article:

Graphics - A card with at least 256mb; no more rendered bitmaps on the CPU, but vector graphics from the GPU.

CPU - Threading, target being to be able to utilize multi-core processors.

Ram - Vista 64-bit get's a whopping 2gig reccomendation, while Vista 32-bit gets a 1gig, with a minimum of 512mb.

Bus - PCI-e is the new in; due to the fact that the GPU might be accessing main memory more.

Display - Monitors with some crappy, crippling, HDCP encoding. What's that mean? No current monitor supports HDCP; time to upgrade.

Overall -

I will not be buying Vista. :thumbsdn:

Keep in mind that Im no Microsoft fan, but there has to be two sides to make this interesting. Keep in mind that Vista is not coming out as a non-Beta release until 2007. By then the technologies required may be outdated, but will nonetheless be much cheaper. In two years I doubt this will be a problem at all.

Dude, Vista has been off my rader since shorty after features started being dropped.

I'm perfectly happy with my current setup. An AMD Athlox XP 2500+ OC'ed to 3200+, a Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB, 1GB PC2100 RAM, why the fuck would I upgrade to run another Windows OS that may not be as stable as Server 2K3?

Jamesp - What the fuck?! They delayed it to '07?! That's a nice graduation present . Great.

That's what I am saying; I thought the launch was in late '06? Oh well, I will just continue to use Window 3.1. :p

Descent - The release date has always been in '07 (maybe late '06), the release now is pre-beta. Dont get your shorts in a wad.

Dude, 3.1 was absolute TITS. It's still so much fucking fun to use, even if you're not nostaglic about it at all. My computer ran 3.1 until October 2000 - I owned a 386SX-16 in '98, and traded up to a Compaq Prolinea 486-66 box the next year. In 2000 I got a Celeron-500/64MB/TNT2/10GB rig that was never great. The store was dodgy. I blew the video card a few weeks back...Sad :(. Now nothing of that system remains anymore.

Last I heard it was Fall '06. That was just a few months back. But I think Microsoft is getting ahead of theirselves. Many great products have failed that were too ahead of their time for that very reason. Like the NeXT computer. Or the Sega CD. The market wasn't ready for either of those, the hardware was too advanced, too expensive, and not enough people cared in their target markets due to that. But I've never heard of software being delayed due to the hardware not being up to par! Christ! Sorry for being a Debbie Downer here, but I think development will be done by late '06 or possibly late '07. People don't want to buy a $7,000 machine or build their own $4,000 "Gibson" to run yet another version of Windows.

The same way no one wanted to spend $10,000 for an NeXT to get programs made faster. Or pay $300 for a Sega CD to get basically enhanced versions of existing Genesis games or shitty interactive movies because not one developer tapped into it's true capabilities, not even Sega.

But I find it to be an interesting reversal now. Software being delayed by hardware. Not the opposite. I mean, you need the hardware to make the software what it is. It's just that we have it, but's it's much too expensive now.

Yeah, 3.1 was awesome. That was before my Linux-fag days... Up until I was like 9, that's all we had. Dial-up modem, and using the free minutes off the ISP CDs we got in the mail. Being poor blew.

Word. I still love 3.1 to this day. I have a lot of rare software for it, like SimTown, SimCity 2000, Kid Pix Studio Deluxe, and even a copy of Sonic's Schoolhouse somewhere, but I can't find that :happysad:.

i got over windows when i spend $1,450 on a windows ME computer. the first time i turned the piece of shit on, i got an "explorer.exe has caused an illegal operation and must be shut down".

red hat's ISOs didn't work for me, but i tried it on my friends computer, it's alright.

i'm on apple. 14'' iBook is awesome. it is like 50 times faster than my dads dell, which has a 2.98ghz P4, 1gig mem, 80gb HD, xp pro, all that other crap, and it's only 2 months old.

i think that apple is the new red hat.

Except that Red Hat is a horribly shitty Linux distro, and OSX is built on BSD. :p

That's because Linux users have more important things to do than play the Sims.

Oh, and BSD is an offshoot of the original UNIX system.

Berkeley Software Distribution

OSX is based on a UNIX like OS, just like Linux. They are very similar.

I have a 12" PowerBook, and I love it, but it lacks some of the things I've come to love about GNU/Linux. Most notably, procfs and some GNU utilities... in OSX you have to dick aroound with Fink to get some to work, which is a pain.

Every heard of WINE or Cedega?
